Summer Eau Claire coffee date

*No podcast version of this one, just written.*

Friends! Hello! Let’s meet at Shift for an iced coffee and split a blackberry-goat cheese scone (which I know sounds weird but actually pairs so deliciously with coffee). There’s so much to catch up on!

My summer has been an absolute blur. We arrived in Eau Claire at our house on June 7, after a week of visiting Duluth, MN and Cable, WI. From the minute we stepped in the door of our house, Chris and I were off to the races and we have not stopped. In the five weeks we have been here we completely furnished a whole house and taken care of all the needed maintenance. I’d love to list out all the things we did but that list would be so so long.

We leave tomorrow morning to start making our way back to Arizona. We are sad to leave our house, the Midwest summer weather, and all the wonderful people we are getting to know here. But how lovely to widen our community and the places we love to be.

Heading into this huge summer project there were so many things to figure out, purchase, and schedule. Day by day we got them done and I’m so glad to have all of those decisions behind me! We’ll leave our house feeling so good about how it looks and how it’s been cared for. But my goodness are we ready for some rest!

In the midst of it all we enjoyed as much as we could of Eau Claire, from outdoor music to the best pizza, the wonderful children’s museum and beautiful library, tried to understand the rules of kubb, and ate plenty of ice cream. We also enjoyed a visit from friends and from family, and then went to Minneapolis for a five-day family reunion. Along the way, Dash and I made an epic trip to Ikea to get all the things, I accidentally sent all of our pots and pans to our Arizona house, and we enjoyed every drop of the rainy June.

Aside from exercising and reading, I unintentionally abandoned nearly all my usual habits: my line-a-day journal, painting my nails, writing blog posts (obviously!), going to bed at any sort of reasonable hour, and listening to audiobooks or many podcasts. I miss them! I knew that this summer would be all-consuming and it’s probably best I didn’t know to what extent ahead of time.

It’s late and my to do list for the day is not yet done, so I’ll leave you with some photos. Another thing I did less of this summer: take photos! We were so often in the middle of a project in the midst of a messy room, and/or a certain someone was having a meltdown.

But here we are. We made it. And Meet the Teacher is on Friday night, so the next season is upon us already, but I absolutely cannot wrap my head around that yet.

I’d love to hear snippets of your summer so far. Have you ever furnished a home in one fell swoop and lived to tell the tale?

I hope you’re having a good summer, friends, and finding rest along the way.

Ha! I had to chuckle at the coincidence. Today on my blog I reflected on the fact I’m burning out in Year 4 of my One Line a Day Journal and I’m not quite sure whether to keep going or not.

You have such a lovely sense of style. I could look at pictures of your places all day. Everything is so calm and aesthetically pleasing. Gold stars for all your hard work.

I had to do a double take at the Meet a Teacher thing. Today marks our 2nd full week of summer vacation. We are just starting when you’re headed back into the academic routine.

Summer has been great so far. It’s busy, but in different ways now that the kids are getting older and more independent. This week we’re visiting my parents who live on a lake and Lake Time is just…amazing. I don’t look in the mirror, I rarely look at my watch (who cares??!!) and so far it has been everything I could have hoped it would be and more. This weekend my eldest is a bridesmaid in a wedding which for some reason just feels like such an adulty thing to do. Like HOW IS SHE OLD ENOUGH TO BE A BRIDESMAID? Not even a junior bridesmaid. Lest you think she has friends getting married at ridiculously young ages, this is for a girl who used to babysit her and actually held her in the hospital on the day she was born, so it’s this very sweet full circle moment.

Hi Elisabeth! I love hearing about your summer! I also put all blog reading on hold for this summer, both to disconnect and honestly I didn’t even have time for it if I wanted to. I am looking forward to dipping back into your posts and hearing what is going on with you. But what cool updates about a summer with t/ween kids! Junior bridesmaid! That is so sweet and special.

I so appreciate your compliment about my house style! I feel I have had to work really hard to learn how to pull things together and am slowly gaining confidence which feels great.

On the line a day journal…hmmm! How much do you enjoy looking back over the entries? If looking at the entries makes you really happy, then consider shifting when you complete your line a day. (Like in the morning with coffee for the previous day, or even every other day.) And if you feel “eh” then abandon without guilt1

Everything I’ve seen you turn your hand to looks lovely and so chic! I love looking at calming interior design. It’s my internet “junk food”.

I do love looking back and I think I just need to approach things a little differently. Only write things down I actually want to remember. And keep in mind it’s okay to just put a smiley face, or a few words. It’s One Line a Day…and yet I usually write 2-3. Burning out caught me by surprise because for 3.5 years it was so easy and felt natural and not at all like it was taking any effort. But I think now that I’ve pondered it a bit more I better understand some of the reasons the OLAD was so helpful for me up until now. I think I’m too much of a completist to stop, but I will make some adjustments to make it easier to maintain!

I’m so glad to see this post! I was getting worried about you- always an odd feeling on the interwebs when you have never actually met =p

I love the house pics! Curious about your furnishing the house–I guess you are renting it furnished from here on out? Or on a renting break?

Honestly, kudos to you if you are still managing to exercise and read–my routines go completely out the window in times like those.

We are five weeks in to an 11 week summer break here. Trying to enjoy all of the easy joys with my younger kids and navigating some “big kids/ big problems” things with my older ones. Parenting continues to be the most humbling experience of my life. On a lighter note, I’ve eaten more ice cream in the past month than I have in years and I have enjoyed all of it! Wishing you well on your trip back home.

Hi Sue! Aw, thank you! I appreciate knowing that people notice when I’m absent here.

High fives for all the summer ice cream, and empathy and cheering as you navigate some tricky parenting stuff. It’s SO hard. It can be so lonely to because each challenge is unique to your kid and family, but also know that every parent currently has a challenge, or will have one in the near future. I hope you are finding all the support you need as you support your kids.

This sounds like a wonderful summer! My grandparents had a summer lake place in Cable, WI for many years during my childhood. Memories!! My eight year old self recommends Garmisch and Lakewoods (their soft serve machine blew my mind!).

My kids start school the first week of August, which feels so soon. I’m trying to remind myself that we’ve done a LOT this summer and the time flew because we were having fun. Wishing you all safe travels home and a peaceful transition to the school year!

Oh wow, really?! What a small world. It was incredible. And the little town seems to have had some newer development in recent years including an incredible coffee shop and pizza place (tried the coffee but sadly not the pizza). I was also sad I did not have a chance to stop into the tiny library and natural history museum (!). Lake like up there is pretty special I can tell.

Oh wow Kelsey! The house looks great. We’ve been in our place two years and I’m still working through furnishing it, I can appreciate how much work you put in this summer!

Our summer just started a few weeks ago and we are loving it so far. A late night at the beach today was a great way to spend a Monday!

Good luck with back to school!

    1. Kelsey Avatar

Hi Ashley, thank you! It was a whirlwind and stressful, but in a way it was great we had a hard deadline too. Made us prioritize and get stuff done.

Love the summer life you are leaning into!

I was cleaning up my Feedly the other day and it dawned on me that I hadn’t seen a new post from you in a while… so I opened your feed in Feedly and it said the last post was from April! I was like, hmm, is this right?! I guess it was! haha. But hey, you’re busy actually LIVING LIFE and that’s what it’s all about. 🙂 We went to a Happiness Museum in Copenhagen in June and there’s this room where everyone writes things they’re grateful for on post-it notes and sticks them on the wall (it’s an entire room full of yellow stickies!). One that stuck with me that someone had written said “moments when I forget to check my phone”. Those really ARE the best moments, aren’t they? When time goes by and you’re so fully engaged in whatever you’re doing that eventually you look up and realize you don’t even know where your phone is! Sounds like maybe that’s the sort of summer you’ve been having, which is amazing!

    1. Kelsey Avatar

Hi Kae! Haha living life indeed!!

Ah, I love that and yes totally agree. I think about that concept; that feeling of being totally consumed and present. Even if it is something somewhat unpleasant is better to be IN THE REAL WORLD and not in a device. I think about that more and more lately.

I’m glad you had a fun Midwest summer. Last year we moved from a partially furnished rental into a new house we bought and had to choose furniture quickly since we were sitting on folding chairs in the living room. Your house looks really nice with everything you got. It’s a lot of pressure to buy a bunch of furniture all at once.

    1. Kelsey Avatar

Hi Sak! Yes, so many decisions! It was stressful but then also great to make them all this summer for a big push and have them behind us. Thank you for your kind words!! I’m really happy with it all, and it makes me appreciate all the work we did.

Glad to see you back! I missed your voice here. Ive never furnished a whole house at once, but we gutted and remodeled, so chose a lot of finishes (and colors and layout and placement of things like vents and outlets and trim) before putting most of our same things back in. Either way, it’s a lot of choices at once! Exhausting! I’m navigating my first summer home with my kids almost full time, and it’s a big change of pace, and often very consuming. Back to school night is in a couple weeks, and I’m just hoping I make it til then! Looking forward to having routine back!

Oh I love how the house turned out! Great style! I live in North Dakota, and we wait all year for summer in the upper midwest 🙂 I’m glad you got to enjoy it!
